Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) was an American actress and performer who toured for more than 40 years. London was a torch performer known for her smooth, soothing vocals and her languid contralto voice she recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955-1969. Her performance of "Cry Me a River", a track she introduced on her debut album, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to her music-related recognition, London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began as an actress when she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career began on film in 1944 which included roles for female leads in many westerns. She starred along with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958), together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s, she signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. In 1969 she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be an actor on the Emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), in which she co-starred with husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband was the producer of the show.
